Like all of Bethesda’s game releases since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Starfield’s original release date was announced as November 11th 2022. Unfortunately due to falling behind in development, it was decided to push the release back until ‘the first half of 2023’. You can see the official tweet from Bethesda below. Read more to see all the information and likelihood about the Starfield release date.
What is the possible Starfield release date?
Bethesda have yet announce a new official release date for Starfield. However there has been a lot of speculation over what the new date may be.
April 12th 2023 (International Day of Human Space Flight)
Some have suggested that Bethesda will make use of Starfield’s unfortunate set-back to release on a day of importance and meaning. A date important not to Bethesda Studios themselves, but to the space theme in which Starfield is set. April the 12th is the annual celebration of the anniversary of the first human space flight by Yuri Gagarin, known as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
Picking such a distinctive date for space travel and a milestone in history to release Starfield would not only be a positive PR move, but also a nice nod to the history of human space flight.
May 5th 2023 (National Astronauts Days)
Alternatively Bethesda (now owned by Microsoft) may choose a date which is more USA targeted. May the 5th is officially ‘National Astronauts Day‘, an American commemorative day since 2017. It commemorates the first United States space human flight back on the 5th of May 1961. The space mission was piloted by astronaut Alan Shepard. Considering Microsoft and Bethesda Softworks are both American owned companies, as US based space celebration could be a preferred date for release.
February 22nd 2023
Bethesda originally released The Elder Scrolls V: Skryrim back on November 11th 2011; the same intended date for Starfield. Although not quite the neat date format as 11.11.11, 11.11.22 was a close match. By this reasoning, 22.2.23 is another plausible date of choice. Not only does it keep within whoever is choosing the dates theme, but gives Bethesda a new target to aim for.
May 7th 2023
One sneaky hint that Bethesda may have been gesturing to us within the gameplay reveal of Starfield, at the Xbox/Bethesda showcase, is May 7th. The demo introduces the ‘sol date’ in-game as ‘May 7, 2330’. It’s a bit of a stretch to assume this was merely picked as way of cunningly revealing the new date of release; but it does beg the question why choose that date at all?
March 23rd 2023
During Starfield’s first gameplay trailer, a ship can be seen displaying a series of numbers on its hull: 821,393. The numbers appear to match the patent serial numbers filed by the Wright brothers for their first “aircraft.” This is possibly a reference to the Wright Brothers original patent application on March 23, 1903.
March 23, 2023 happens to be 120 years since the Wright Brothers got their first patent, and that date will also be the Thursday that the game traditionally releases in the United States.
Browsing through Starfield’s gameplay trailer, it doesn’t seem like there are any significant numbers on either ship, until the final seconds when the player’s own ship flies across the screen before jumping into hyperspace. Here, it can be clearly see the ship has printed the numbers 821,393.
Some Other Time May/June 2023
Although it is unknown the precise date of Starfield’s release yet, it has been confirmed Redfall (another new Bethesda release) is likely to launch first. Redfall, like Starfield, was also delayed into the first half of 2023. Considering we can expect Redfall to therefore launch late January/February/March time, Starfield will likely launch sometime a month or two after. This pushes Starfield’s release into about late May or early June. It also gives Bethesda more time to finish any last minute developments and fixes the game will need.
